2011 Individual Income Tax Return Checklist
INCOME
· Salary or wages (payment summary)
· Allowances, earnings, tips, director’s fees etc
· Employment termination payments (eg redundancy)
· Government allowances and payments like newstart, youth allowance and Austudy payment
· Australian Government pensions and allowances like age pension, parenting payment
· Interest, Dividends & Managed fund distributions – will need tax statements
· Rent (Gross rental income, as well as all rental deductions, agent statements, loan statements and new rental asset dates and amounts)
· Capital Gains – both purchase and sale details, eg. shares, rental properties sold in 2011
· Business & contracting income (gross income as well as expenses, new business asset dates and amounts for investment allowance, new equipment/car finance documents for interest).

Work/business related car expenses
Did you travel from your place of work to other places of work (eg between job sites/offices)? If so, a reasonable estimate of the kilometres, the make and model of the car you own/ed, allows us to claim based on the cents per kilometre method (up to a maximum of 5,000km). For estimated travel over 5,000km in the year, we have alternative methods. We can choose the method that provides you with the largest claim, including log book if you’ve kept one with all your receipts for the year.
Work/business related travel expenses
Employee domestic travel & Overseas travel (eg to other offices, to conferences etc).
Work related uniform and other clothing expenses
Protective, occupation specific, and compulsory uniform purchases, and laundry expenses.
Work related self-education expenses
Course/s taken at educational institution that relates to your current work activities including; course fees, books, stationery, seminars, travel, other costs.
Other work/business related expenses
Home office expenses (must be dedicated room that is only an office), Computer and software, Telephone/mobile phone/internet, Tools and equipment (purchase date & amount to depreciate), Subscriptions and union fees, Journals/periodicals, Sun protection products (i.e., sunscreen and sunglasses), Seminars, conferences, training and courses not at an educational institution.
Other common deductions
Interest and dividend deductions (eg loan interest & fees), Gifts or donations, income protection insurance premiums, spouse or self employed super contributions.
Tax offsets/rebates
· Did you have private health insurance in 2011? We’ll need your fund tax statement.
· Did you have net medical expenses over $2,000? (not including cosmetic surgery)
